Edward Lodewijk Van Halen HAY-len; January 26, 1955 – October 6, 2020) was an American performer, musician, maker, and designer. He was the fundamental lyricist and lead guitarist of the American musical crew Van Halen, which he helped to establish in 1972 with his sibling, drummer Alex Van Halen, bassist Mark Stone, and artist David Lee Roth. He was notable for promoting the tapping guitar solo strategy, permitting fast arpeggios to be played with two hands on the fretboard. In 2012, he was casted a ballot number one of every a Guitar World magazine peruser's survey for "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
